This chapter describes the perils of a universalist approach to the revolutionary movement by examining the postrevolutionary gender politics. It offers a detailed narrative of the controversy over the imposition of hejāb in 1979 and Western feminists’ failed attempt to shape the local politics of Iranian women activists.
