The chapter reviews the consequences of political opposition to change of almost any sort; a politics of no has become too easy for individuals and communities to use as a wedge to stop things they might even acknowledge they need, as long as it does not happen in their ken. The chapter describes two situations that highlight the perversity of such an oppositional politics: an aborted attempt to build affordable housing in a community that desperately needed it and a frustrated effort at stopping gun violence in a city that wanted it. The ability of design to find win-win solutions to major problems stands in contrast to the lose-lose nature of this resistant political culture
Keywords: politics of no, political opposition, gun violence, affordable housing, denial, conflict resolution
