“Sambo’s Awakening” is a biography of Our Gang’s breakout star, Allen “Farina” Hoskins, who evoked the “pickaninny” caricature with his ragged clothes, wild hair, and indeterminate gender, but who was embraced by the black community as a symbol of racial uplift. It also describes Farina’s experience of Jim Crow during Our Gang publicity tours.
