Azorean and Azorean American Literacy Lives
Azoreans’ transnational letter writing and other literacy practices became entangled in state bureaucracies, as they wrote to attain legal papers. In this process, they did not use literacy to assimilate to an American identity, but instead to a bureaucratic one, becoming “American by paper.”
