Therapeutic Techniques in an Anti-Homosexual Era, 1948–1972
Following the landmark Kinsey studies, psychoanalysts in the United States responded to the threat of homosexuality with treatments that departed from Freud, measuring cure in terms of behavior. Behavior therapists challenged them with experimental methods and tests of physiology, including “phallometric testing” of men’s sexual arousal patterns with erotic imagery.
