This chapter considers Anonymous as an improper name that is contended by different factions of the network through a series of agonistic challenges. Rather than treating Anonymous as a pure marker of anonymity, the chapter analyzes the tension between anonymity and pseudonymity in relation to the different reputation economies and ethos of the hacker and activist world.

Keywords:   Anonymous, pseudonym, anonymity, Internet activism, social movements, subjectivity, authorship
