This chapter discusses the significance of race in understanding rap music by comparing the performances of African-American Philip Morris and K-Pro, who is of Latin American descent, during a rapping battle at a club in Chicago. It examines studies that associated rap music with blackness and the urban African American experience, linking the rap genre to black history and culture. For author William Wimsatt, rap music is a black response to white America’s economic and psychological terrorism against black people, while Africana studies scholar Tricia Rose believed that rap music articulates the pleasures and problems of black urban life in contemporary America.
