Geoff Harkness

University of Minnesota Press

This chapter talks about the “beef” or rivalry of two rapping gang groups in Chicago: Xcons and Bully Boyz. It begins by describing the criminal activities and imprisonment of Habit, Bleek, and Boss Bee before becoming members of Xcons, followed by an analysis of the origins of Bully Boyz and its members Phantastic, Shank, Grafta, and Hymnal. The chapter also talks about the popularity of mixtapes in rap-music microscenes and the cultural practices of street gangs that have been transformed by the Internet, in which social media is used as a tool for communicative practices.
