One of the most important distinctions between these two phases of architectural history lies in a fundamental change in attitude to the status of images in architectural work. This change is examined through close analysis of the early work of Alison and Peter Smithson in contrast to that of James Stirling; and the transition from Rudolf Wittkower’s writing to that of Reyner Banham. These paired case studies are distributed through Chapter 9. This chapter joins building and infrastructure, and text and image, topics that were examined separately in the first two parts of the book.
