This chapter reflects on a transcontinental bus trip that the author took during the pre-Reagan summer of 1980 in search of community. On this trip, the author was not immediately struck by the paradox: that in search of community she is leaving home. This was a time for her to break out of her everyday web of connections—to her friends, her women’s group, the man she has begun to think about living with—and go on the road. She left New York on Greyhound’s express to Montreal, crossing the border after midnight and stopping in Detroit. She remembers that during the 1960s the men she met on buses used to ask if she was a hippie; during the 1970s they asked if she was a women’s libber. Here she talks about the places and cities, as well as the people, she visited during her travel.
