Toward a National Man Policy

Toward a National Man Policy

(p.172) Toward a National Man Policy
Beginning to See the Light

Ellen Willis

University of Minnesota Press

This chapter presents the author’s satirical account of the apparently serious man shortage in the US. At first, most women assumed the situation was temporary, a side effect of unavoidable dislocations in the country’s psychic economy. There was a lot of private grumbling, but no calls for action. But lately the atmosphere has begun to change. More and more she hears ominous talk of a “man crisis” and allegations that the government and the media have been covering it up. She recalls a conversation at a party where a few dozen women shared their horror stories on trying to find a man. Polygamy is also proposed as a solution to the problem.
