This chapter presents the author’s reflections about how her women friends all seem to become obsessed with family come December: they worry about aging parents and confused siblings, haggle with ex-spouses over who gets the kids for which holidays, and have second thoughts about arriving in their mid-thirties unencumbered—and unconnected. The author, however, is somewhat insulated from the seasonal angst; since her family, being Jewish, has never made a big deal of Christmas. Rather, she thinks of the holidays as a period when the pace of the city slows down and she has more time than usual to read, go to the movies, wander around, and shop.
