The Minnesota Massacre, 1978 Version
The Minnesota Massacre, 1978 Version
This chapter focuses on the course of events within Minnesota politics that began with the Carter-Mondale campaign in November 1976. The opening of Walter Mondale’s senate seat triggered the disorder and caused Governor Wendell Anderson and Lieutenant Governor Rudy Perpich to leave their current positions. These changes created turmoil within the DFL House Caucus, with Congressman Don Fraser joining in the fray for the senate seat, making his seat available for more competition. The Republicans took advantage and joined the skirmish, resulting in at least twenty-four members of the legislature running or considering running for one of the several open seats. The 1978 election then came to be known as the Minnesota Massacre, which ended in a remarkable yet short-lived defeat for the DFL in the legislature.
