This chapter illustrates how understanding the cognitive processes involved in reading comprehension can inform efforts to address the educational needs of struggling readers. The first part presents an overview of what happens during reading comprehension as a reader proceeds through a text and where comprehension processes may fail. The second part discusses issues concerning the assessment of comprehension ability.
