The Mute Prince

The Mute Prince

(p.3) The Mute Prince

Kalpana Rahita Seshadri

University of Minnesota Press

This chapter tells the story about a prince named Temiya, who refused to speak or move after witnessing King Sakka of Benares’ great power in executing and torturing four prisoners. Frustrated with Temiya’s condition, the king sought soothsayers for answers, who advised the king to kill the prince as he is a danger to the kingdom. The king, in fear of losing his power and title, ordered his servant Sunanda to take Temiya away and execute him. But when Sunanda was about to kill Temiya, the prince suddenly spoke and moved. Astonished by Temiya’s mobility, Sunanda returned to the kingdom to inform the King. But when the king went to see Temiya, the prince had already disappeared.
