Werner Herzog, Documentary Outsider
Werner Herzog, Documentary Outsider
This introductory chapter first sets out the book’s purpose, namely to explore Werner Herzog’s ambivalent and innovative relationship with documentary cinema. The book proceeds from the counterintuitive idea that Herzog dismisses documentary as a mode of filmmaking to creatively intervene and participate in it. The chapter discusses how Herzog revels in his position as a documentary outsider, which he reinforces by blurring the line between fiction and nonfiction in his work. Nonetheless, the context of documentary circumscribes much of his work, providing the very forms, conventions, rituals, and taboos that he both refuses and engages in his films. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
