The Realm of Koura
The Realm of Koura
This chapter talks about the realm of the “koura” or crayfish, which focuses on the Māori-Pacific connections that are elaborated and negotiated in the national context of Aotearoa, New Zealand. In the realm of koura, the Pacific is dynamically present within the boundaries of the nation-state of New Zealand, and despite the earlier roots of Pasifika communities in rural labor and the presence of Pacific people in rural and provincial schools from the early 20th century, the story of Māori and Pasifika connections is mainly considered an urban story.
