Accessorizing the Modern(ist) Body
Accessorizing the Modern(ist) Body
The subject of this book is modern accessories, especially those accessories that hug the body, close clothes, those that come into direct contact with skin (necklaces, tiaras, hats, shoes, sandals), or cling nearby (vests, gowns, slinky dresses), and their decorations. It argues that whether the accessory is an absolute sine qua non (like shoes) or a nonessential item (like a brooch), it has ended up becoming the quintessence of fashion and of market forces. The aim of the chapters in this collection is not to argue any preestablished theory. Rather, this volume can be viewed as a collection of specific, yet significant, instance of the modern(ist) habits of being.
