Mutsuo Takahashi

This chapter talks about Takahashi Mutsuo’s childhood perception of his father, Shirō, who died a few months after his birth. It describes the self-portrait painting and family grave stone that helped Mutsuo create a mental image of Shirō, and the stories told by Mutsuo’s mother, Hisako, that points out Shirō’s resemblances with Mutsuo. The chapter also provides an account of Mutsuo meeting Hisako’s lover, Ōgushi Kanjirō, who for a short time became a father figure to Mutsuo.
