This chapter explains how the IBM design program established the modern image of computers for the public outside of the computer laboratory, emphasizing important facets of the technical and aesthetic qualities of the computer. It also maintains that the interface, with its nature as a surface, is not to be deemed a mere exterior as its graphics, I/O devices, machine casings, and exhibition techniques played a large part in establishing man’s relationship with the computer and the corporation alike. The chapter concludes by stating that the increasing critical study of the computerization of architecture, design, and art will certainly influence humanity’s perception of virtual reality.
