Darkness and Illumination

Darkness and Illumination

(p.205) Revelations Darkness and Illumination
Diane Arbus's 1960s

Frederick Gross

University of Minnesota Press

This chapter presents the author’s reflections on the Revelations exhibition, which was held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2004–2005. He says that the sheer number of new pictures and objects in the exhibition justified what he believed to be lacking in the Arbus scholarship and sealed the conviction that significant things about Arbus’s work needed more scholarly attention. Particularly striking was the dialectical tension between darkness and illumination in the exhibition. The dialectic concerned both the composition of the photographs and what might be termed as the “legacy of Arbus,” why her images are so important to the history of art.
