This chapter discusses the process of joining and establishing therapeutic alliance. The intake is the phase where therapist and client establish their working alliance. The five stages of intake are: joining, exploration, problem redefinition, treatment plan, and contract. The therapist–client relationship is the basis for therapeutic work, and this concept is inclusive of the positive affective bonds, such as mutual trust, liking, respect, and caring.
