How the System Changes

(p.69) 5 How the System Changes
The Functional Dialectic System Approach to Therapy for Individuals, Couples, and Families

Moshe Almagor

University of Minnesota Press

This chapter discusses change as the core concept of the system approach. Two rules govern family and system—the behavior-first-order change and the second-order change. First-order change is a behavioral change that does not involve a change in system rules, while second-order change is a behavioral change that involves a change in the system’s rules. The therapist’s goal is to help families undergo a second-order change that will enable them to establish the necessary conditions to achieve their goal. The chapter further explains the concept of reframing and externalization.
