The Continuing Struggle over Recognition
This chapter discusses how New England Indians are compelled to depend on accounts claiming their extinction in order to validate their survival. What distinguishes American Indians from other races in the US is their Indian nationhood; as stated by Lumbee political scientist David E. Wilkins, Indian peoples are not minorities, but nations. The chapter presents various Indian listings detailing their numbers and circumstances in southern New England, wherein some of the most complete catalogs were produced exactly in relation with the efforts of dismissing the official recognition of Indian peoples. Nevertheless, New England Indians are persistently reforming themselves as Indian peoples in their homeland and modernity.
