Toward the Scripting of Intimate Space

This chapter discusses the shaping of contemporary art through various disconnected events and interactions (the “interhuman intrigue”) that eventually form an artistic cohesion in avant-garde. Using the material properties of “felt” as a metaphor, with its haptic and insulating nature, the chapter illustrates the concept of warmth that can be traced through different social and political interactions throughout history. This metaphor implicates a communion between Buddhism and that of the Fluxus artist Joseph Beuys, whose insights on art and art culture vis-à-vis contemporary society will be further detailed in later chapters. Suffice it to say that given avant-garde’s penchant for creating discourse, as well as the social correlations created within the interhuman intrigue, Beuys is able to lay down the foundations of his own concept of peace—as succinctly termed, “love”.
