Ways of Seeing and the Surreal of Reality

Ways of Seeing and the Surreal of Reality

(p.135) 5 Ways of Seeing and the Surreal of Reality
Recording Reality, Desiring the Real

Elizabeth Cowie

University of Minnesota Press

This chapter discusses how documentary film may engage spectators in the surreal of reality. A certain loss always occurs in every representation of documentary. The chapter explores the behavior of viewers particularly during the moments when something slips as they try to “make sense” of what they see and hear, or during the moments when a “little bit of real” appears on the documentary. It also explores the contributions of Jean Rouch regarding the concept of unified subjectivity, and the concept of engaged imagination.
