Chapter Three (“Folding Time”) takes up the question of the virtual and shows how Pierre Huyghe’s video installation The Ellipsis and Chris Marker’s CD-ROM Immemory transform film history in a reservoirs of virtual traces for the emergence of future memories. The chapter ends by proposing Merleau-Ponty’s notion of the fold to reinterpret that most distinctively cinematic operation, the edit.
