This chapter deals with the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party’s takeover of the sixty-eighth session of the Minnesota Legislature. The DFL legislators elected Martin Sabo as Speaker of the House and Nick Coleman as Senate Majority Leader, and appointed Irv Anderson as the new caucus leader. The new majority promptly made changes to the legislative process and implemented the flexible-session amendment, allowing the legislature to expand its 120-day limit by over two years. The DFL ratified the proposed equal rights amendment, and passed consumer protection bills and various disability rights proposals. There was also a stream of legislations addressing the environment, education, consumer affairs, election laws, and labor. It was evident that the state government had drastically changed, and that the DFL had continued its dominance of state politics.
