The afterword asks: “Can hunger speak?” In it, I establish a dialogue between narratives of extreme hunger by Aimé Césaire and Edwidge Danticat and Primo Levi’s writing on Auschwitz. Through this trans-historical connection. I argue that hunger is not, cannot remain, the absolute speaking subject. Humanity speaks despite and through hunger, turning hunger into its own vessel. I call for an ethical reading practice that I call “relational metabolism” severed from the confrontational moment of literary cannibalism.
