This chapter focuses on Witi Ihimaera and Hinewirangi, two Māori writers based in Aotearoa who have written about Māori as a part of the regional Pacific. It discusses Ihimaera's 1987 novel The Whale Rider, which received huge attention since the popularity of the film Whale Rider, but has received little attention for its commitment to Pacific regionalism; and Hinewirangi's 1990 collection of poetry kanohi ki te kanohi, in which the poet reflects on engagements with indigenous people in specific places around the world. Both Ihimaera and Hinewirangi's works emphasizes the Māori practice of connection.
