This chapter (the first in a series of five chapters that study particular conceptions of finality) shows the failure of neo-materialist theories to explain organisms and organic development and argues that it recommits the old errors of mechanist determinism. Ruger argues that neofinalism recognizes lines of individual continuity between active, subjective, and normative beings against the reductivity of materialism.
