Zheng describes terminology used by the LGBT community in China, such as “tongzhi.” She also explains cultural traditions related to same-sex behaviour among Chinese men in Dalian that she has observed, as well as the general cultural response to these behaviors. She discusses the debate between local essentialism and Western homogenization, as well as Chinese views on gender and sexuality and how they relate to politics. Finally, she explains the process that she went through in her fieldwork as she conducted her research.
