Chapter 4 opens up the empirical analysis of protest politics by focusing on conflict intensity and transnationalization. The analyses show that Western Europe saw protest waves during the early 1980s and again since the 1990s. Although there is a certain transnationalization, most visible in the 2000s, the trend remains fairly limited.
