This chapter details events in Fritz Lang’s life from 1930 to 1931. These include the making of the film M, which starred Peter Lorre. Premiering in 1931, M evidenced not only the most advanced command of camera, lighting, and editing technique, but philosophically probed into the depths of sin and criminality, hate and redemption. The chapter also discusses the end of Lang’s affair with Gerda Maurus and the start of a new one with Lily Latté; the growing power of the Nazis; Thea von Harbou’s affair with young Indian journalist Ayi Tendulkar and her growing belief in the Nazi vision.
