This chapter explores the ways a statist, developmental landscape are taken up in both Singaporean political and poetic discourses. It examines the political discourse of Lee Kuan Yew in contrast to the works of Thumboo and Arthur Yap. Thumboo’s national poetry demonstrates how a poetic aesthetic might be forged in terms of the new, while in contrast, Yap stresses an equal investment in poetically reworking urban forms that show other possibilities for thinking the Singapore nation. The chapter also reviews the origins of Lee’s 31-year authoritarian-style rule that emphasized on competent governments and social cohesion.
