Mutsuo Takahashi

University of Minnesota Press

This chapter talks about Takahashi Mutsuo’s childhood memories of his mother, Hisako. It describes Mutsuo’s experience at the age of two when Hisako carries him on her back while buying fish, and the time Hisako told Mutsuo about a boy who was arrested for disrespecting the emperor while walking to her dormitory at the Mitsubishi Mining Company. The most significant memory for Mutsuo was being carried on Hisako’s back and hearing that World War II was over, which reminded him of his Uncle Ken’ichi who died during the war.
