It is followed by a description of events that transpired during and after Mutsuo’s birth, the death of Mutsuo’s father and Hisako’s suicide attempt that almost killed Mutsuo and his older sister Miyuki. The chapter also details Hisako’s experiences from the time she left for China to be employed as a nanny to the Ōgushi household, her affair with Ōgushi Kanjirō and abortion of their child, to her return a year after leaving Japan.
