This chapter centers on writings that surfaced around the museum institution during the late-nineteenth-century nationalization of the sciences. In a way that parallels the artistic reconciliation of commercial (international) and national values in Chapter 1, the urgency around establishing a specifically national claim to Mexican archaeology surfaces after foreign scholarship and interest had dominated the field for centuries. Using a selection of writings from the published annals of the Museo Nacional of Mexico, and focusing specifically on the example of the Salón de Arqueología as inaugurated in September 1910, the museum is analyzed as a site of collective memory, in which a national reclaiming of archeological patrimony is inextricably linked to the question of educating the contemplative citizen to recognize herself as such.
