This chapter presents a close reading of Dante Cerano’s short documentary Dia dos (2004). It considers the ways in which it may be, if not representative, then at least indicative of the ways in which video production from within Indigenous communities troubles the norms of ethnographic representations and genre categories. It shows how Cerano evokes the genres of ethnographic film, wedding video, beer commercial, and hip-hop music video while confounding and complicating the genre expectations of his viewers. It suggests that Dia dos is exemplary of the way that new digital technologies and nonlinear editing software have enabled not just a new class of practitioner but new representations of Native Mexico. These representations, like so much that outsiders see and experience when spending time in Indigenous communities in Mexico, are often surprising and sometimes seemingly unfathomable.
