This chapter discusses the concept of envelope—the structural and nonspecific elements of the therapeutic system. The envelope embraces the therapeutic process and sets its limits and boundaries. Issues related to joining, contract, and resistance are envelope-specific. They are essential for therapy but are not necessarily related to its technique. The chapter addresses the major issues that concern therapy such as situations when therapists newly join the system, and situations when therapists encounters people who are quite different from them in a number of aspects. It explains why joining is all about loving in which the clients need to feel loved, respected, and appreciated.
