This chapter discusses the concept of distress—control dialectics of the symptom. The symptom is an amplification of the distress signal. It is a message sent by a member signaling that the system is in jeopardy. The chapter describes functional dialectic system (FDS) view of the symptom by presenting a number of therapy vignettes. It concludes that using FDS thinking changes the nature of the presenting maladaptive behavior. The dialectic meaning changes the view of pathology and makes it less frightening and debilitating. It explains how clients’ ability to see the positive side, makes their thinking more complex but helps reduce the threat pose by negativistic view.
