This chapter describes how global modernity enables and ceases movement through cultural visions of the Indian railway, focusing on the way terror as a cultural process converges on the image of the train both in texts and the real world. It explains the symbolic aspects of terror as it intersects with the real and imaginative history of the Indian railway and emphasizes the inherent contradictions of modernity expressed in the form of violence. The chapter concludes with a review of the symbolic history of the Indian train, and a discussion of how the cultural association between modernity and mobility both obscures and reveals the paradoxes of the modern.
