This chapter excavates Dennis Hopper’s almost-forgotten, misbegotten masterpiece The Last Movie, a film that offers an object lesson in Hollywood (and American) imperialism. It argues that The Last Movie makes visible the violent forms of cultural colonialism that Hollywood films practice in their attempt to disavow, conceal, and eradicate the ambiguities of local cultures and places where they are often filmed and to which they are often exported. In doing so, it allied itself—however unwittingly—with the emerging Third Cinema practices of Latin America and Africa. And yet, as a capitalist-financed über-production of the first world that is merely set in the third world—rather than being a genuine collaboration between the developed and developing worlds—The Last Movie was itself the kind of film it so astutely critiqued.
