This introductory chapter examines the authority and freedom in a group home for adults with intellectual disability or mental retardation. The case study presented is based on more than a year of fieldwork conducted at Driggs House, a group home in New York City with fifteen residents. It demonstrates how Driggs House depends on the voluntary and skillful participation of all those who live and work there. For the residents, group home work mainly involves the work they do on themselves to become more independent. The case study shows how a group home accomplishes its task of supervising individuals who are thought of as free yet incapable of freedom.
