In this chapter, the author, a first-generation Swedish American, describes in more detail the lives of his father, Oscar Waldemar Lindberg, his wife Helen, and their respective families as Swedish immigrants in Chicago. While Helen fretted in Skokie, her parents, Richard and Emma Stone, enjoyed their “empty nest” on Navarre Avenue. In December 1949, Richard Stone decided to apply for full American citizenship. It had been twenty-five years since Oscar’s flight from Sweden. His brothers and sisters were middle-aged now, comfortable and secure raising their children in a socialist country where the scales of social justice tilted for the rural poor and the yeoman farmer. The anguish and sufferings of the monarchical years were behind them. In the fall of 1949, Richard believed that he could finally relax, take stock of his world, and ride out his final years with Emma in comparative comfort. That was his dream, until he was diagnosed with incurable cancer.
