This chapter discusses how the art history and cinema enthusiasts influenced the films of the Quay Brothers. Some of their influences came from filmmakers Aleksandr Dovzhenko, Robert Bresson, and Theodor Dreyer. These filmmakers often used impressionist cinema and surrealism that were both depicted in the Quay Brothers’ films Nocturna Artificialia, The Cabinet of Jan Ŝvankmajer, and Street of Crocodiles. The Quay Brothers also used surrealism in order to set the mood for their films, through special lightings, camera styles, and source materials. This chapter then explores more cinematic devices, such as montage, lighting, lenses, and camera techniques, in order to demonstrate how Surrealism’s dream imagery can be effectively perceived by the film viewers.
